A Service Pack, also known as a Tools Release, is an upgrade to the foundation layer of EnterpriseOne. Upgrading a Service Pack should not impact any application code. Well, that’s the theory anyway.
Here is a clump of terms that go together; SAR, ESU, ASU, UPDATE. Those four acronyms are related to bug fixes, application updates, and the documentation for the changes.
A SAR (Service Action Request) is the documentation for a bug fix or enhancement. When you call into the support center and report a new bug, they create a SAR to track the bug and the fix.
An ESU (Electronic Software Update) is a bug fix. Prior to ESUs, JDE sent out paper bug fixes. They emailed you the code, and your developer had to type it.
An ASU (Application Software Update) is an application enhancement.
An Update is a rollup of all of the previous ESUs and ASUs that allows you to do a major update to your system. Developers dread updates because there are thousands of objects that need to be tested.
ESUs, ASUs and Updates sometimes break objects that were working fine before. Extensive testing by developers and key business users are required after applying patches, especially Updates.
